How to choose the right castor
Three checks before you order — get these right and your trolley, bench or machine will roll smoothly and stay put.
Work out load per castor
On uneven floors one castor often lifts, so size each castor to carry a third of the total.
Total weight ÷ 3 = load per castor
Example: a 900kg trolley needs castors rated at 300kg or more each.
Match the wheel to your floor
- Rubber / elastic rubber — quiet, grips and protects finished floors
- Polyurethane — heavy loads with easy rolling on concrete
- Nylon — hard-wearing on smooth floors, resists many chemicals
- Anti-static — for electronics and ESD-controlled areas
Pick the fixing and brakes
- Top plate — bolts through a flat plate
- Bolt hole — one bolt into a tube or leg
- Fit brakes on at least two castors so the load can't drift
- Mix 2 swivel + 2 fixed for long loads that need to run straight

What is the difference between swivel and fixed castors?
Swivel castors rotate 360° so you can steer; fixed castors only roll forwards and backwards. Most trolleys use two of each, or four swivels when tight turning matters.
How do I measure for a bolt-hole castor?
Check the bolt thread size (for example M12 or M16) and the bolt length, then pick the wheel diameter and load you need. The bolt size is given in each listing.
How do I measure for a top plate castor?
Measure the plate size and the hole centres on your trolley; each listing gives the top plate dimensions and hole centres so you can match them.
Which castors are best for heavy loads?
Work out the load per castor first, then choose a castor rated above it. Larger wheels and polyurethane or cast iron centred wheels roll more easily under heavy loads.
