Choosing a castor
How do I work out the load rating I need?
Add the weight of the equipment to its heaviest load, then divide by the number of castors minus one. On an uneven floor one wheel is often off the ground, so a 4-castor trolley carrying 600kg needs castors rated at least 200kg each.
What is the difference between a top plate and a bolt hole castor?
A top plate castor bolts flat to a base using four holes in the plate. A bolt hole castor fixes through a single central hole, which suits tubes, furniture legs and narrow frames.
Which wheel material should I choose?
Rubber and polyurethane tyres are quiet and protect finished floors. Nylon and cast iron roll easily under heavy loads on smooth or rough concrete. Choose anti-static wheels for electronics and labs, high temperature wheels for ovens, and puncture-proof wheels for outdoor use.
How many braked castors do I need?
Most trolleys use two braked and two unbraked castors. For steering in a straight line, fit two fixed castors at one end and two swivel castors at the other.
Can you match my old castor?
Yes. Send a photo of the castor and its plate or bolt on WhatsApp (07822 012977) or by email (sales@castorhub.co.uk), with the wheel diameter and overall height, and we will find the closest match in our range.
